If someone is having a heart attack, immediate action is crucial.
✅ Here's what you should do 👇
❤️ Call Emergency Services (911 or your local emergency number):
- Describe the symptoms and follow their instructions.
❤️ Help the Person Sit Down:
- Have them sit down and stay calm. Ideally, they should sit on the floor with their knees bent, which can help reduce the strain on the heart.
❤️ Administer Aspirin:
- If the person is not allergic to aspirin and has not been advised by their doctor to avoid it, give them one adult aspirin (300 mg) or four baby aspirin (81 mg each). They should chew it slowly to help it absorb faster.
❤️ Administer Nitroglycerin if Available:
- If the person has been prescribed nitroglycerin and they have it on hand, assist them in taking it as directed by their doctor.
❤️ Monitor Their Condition:
- Stay with the person and monitor their condition until emergency services arrive.
- Be prepared to start CPR if the person loses consciousness and stops breathing. Perform chest compressions at a rate of about 100-120 per minute. If trained and confident, use rescue breaths as well.
❤️ Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if Available:
- If the person is unconscious and an AED is available, follow the device's instructions to administer a shock.
Key Symptoms of a Heart Attack:
- Chest pain or discomfort (feels like pressure, squeezing, or fullness)
- Pain or discomfort in the arm(s), back, neck, jaw, or stomach
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea, lightheadedness, or breaking out in a cold sweat
